So you want to take your pet on an adventure?
TRAVELLING with pets and where to start
I believe the most important thing about travelling with anybody, whether it’s your pets, your kids, your parents, is being able to listen to them. If you want everybody to enjoy the trip you need to know when they are stressed, tired or unhappy and be able to adjust.
Second important thing, again, everyone is different, one cat will be a bigger adventurer than many dogs, but a second cat will hate the moment you put him in the carrier.
Keep that in mind before you head out for this adventure. Pets are not travel accessories, but companions and we need to treat them as such.
So boring stuff out the way, you have a pet that shares your passion for adventure, you know what makes them happy, what makes them stressed and you want to take them for this first big adventure, here are a few simple tips to get you started.
1. Plan accordingly
Just as you would with orginising a trip for your friends or your parents, you need to make sure that your itinerary is fun and appropriate for everyone. A city break and museum jumping, may not necessary be a good trip for a dog who may not be allowed in most museums. But maybe, if you always wanted to visit that one museum, there may be a fun doggy day care nearby. Or you want to hike this 20 mile loop around the mountain, but your dog has short legs and wouldn’t manage the whole hike. Packing a nice dog backpack might be a great idea then.
